The Call for a Moab Wedding Planner… in July

When I first got the call about a wedding in Moab, Utah in July I was… worried to say the least. Was it going to be 108 degrees while our guests baked in the hot desert sun? How much sunscreen would we need? How would we shade everyone? Why in the world would anyone choose to get married in the desert in July? I love to be a Moab wedding planner, but at what cost?

My concerns were quickly dashed when I learned that the couple, B+K, were getting married at Whispering Oaks Ranch, a perfect destination wedding venue. As stated perfectly on their website,

“Located in the beautiful La Sal Mountains, Whispering Oaks Ranch offers serene mountain country, amazing views of the canyonlands, quaint and comfortable lodging, and much more including convenient central access to Utah’s Adventure Capital!”

And at exactly 8,000 feet, it is perched far above the hot & sandy desert and perfect for a mid-summer wedding.  After the I had the facts straight and did a bit of research, I could hardly contain my excitement about doing a wedding at this beautiful mountain location.

An Incredible Moab Wedding Venue

The day before the wedding I arrived on site to survey all of the beauty and great amenities we had to work with.  To start, there is the perfect covered pavilion, ready to be filled with whatever style of wedding décor your heart desires. In total, 1,800 square feet are ready to accommodate you and up to 200 guests. There are also 2 (non-covered) decks for extra lounge space where guests can soak in the beautiful mountain sun. They have tables and chairs on-site for their events so you don’t have to worry about coordinating a rental crew to bring anything up. Fans line the ceiling providing a little breeze if the day gets too hot for the comfort of your guests.

There is a black & white checkered dance floor & built-in sound system and stage. This pavilion is party-ready and can accommodate a live band, a DJ or even an MP3 player! They even have an indoor caterer’s prep room with refrigerators and a chest freezer- making life easier for your vendors to store and create their masterpieces.

Pavilion and great set-up aside, the area surrounding the space is a beautiful grassy lawn (55,000 square feet to be exact) with incredible La Sal mountain views. Everywhere you look you are surrounded by the beauty of the Utah landscape. The lawn is the perfect spot for a ceremony, and just where B+K decided to conduct theirs.

After a quick rehearsal on Friday night, it was time to partially set up our space for the weekend. One huge bonus of Whispering Oaks is that they offer such robust on-site lodging, up to 65 guests can stay in one of their 7 beautiful & luxurious cabins, many of which are complete with hot tubs for an evening soak. If you choose to rent the cabins & the pavilion, you have access to the space starting on Friday- which can be a great opportunity to set up some tables & chairs ahead of the game.

Wedding Day in Moab, UT

On the wedding day, our very non-traditional couple chose to get ready together in the largest cabin and took photos before the ceremony began so they could enjoy more time with their guests. Set-up ran smoothly, wedding hair & make-up by the fabulous Atomic Salon in Moab went perfectly and beautifully, and we started our ceremony perfectly on time.

We love all non-traditional, personal, and different elements that couples bring to their wedding, and our bride, K, delighted us when she decided to walk herself down the aisle to Willie Nelson’s “Don’t Fence Me In” while wearing an incredible baby blue embroidered silk robe. It was incredible.  A friend of the couple officiated a beautiful ceremony, complete with readings from the groom’s sisters- one from Albert Einstein and one from a Pablo Neruda, a poet.

After the ceremony ended it was time for food & drinks! Moab Private Chef delighted guests with appetizers and an open bar quenched their thirst. It is tough to find a wedding caterer in Moab as professional and preparing food as delicious as Moab Private Chef, and dinner was fabulous, fresh and perfectly executed. Donuts finished off our meal and added another fun, non-traditional element.

Finally, it was party time and Wedding DJ Utah (Brady) was ready with the music everyone was ready to hear! Dancing erupted right away and didn’t slow down until midnight when it was time to shut the party down.

This wedding was one of the more unique weddings we’ve had the privilege to work on, and we loved every second. Whispering Oaks truly is the perfect Moab wedding venue and we were happy to be the Moab wedding planners for the occasion.

When you think of wedding venues in Moab, Utah you might think only of red rocks and sandy landscapes, but don’t forget about the magical Whispering Oaks Ranch that provides green grass, higher elevation cool temperatures, and a different kind of experience altogether.
